How to Cook Turkey


As a general guide, turkeys should be roasted in an oven preheated to 180°C (350°F, Gas Mark 4). The cooking time depends on the size of your turkey – we suggest the following:

  • for a turkey under 4.5kg, allow 45 minutes per kg plus 20 minutes
  • for a turkey weighing between 4.5kg and 6.5kg, allow 40 minutes per kg
  • for a turkey over 6.5kg, allow 35 minutes per kg

Adlington tips for the perfect turkey – enjoy an unforgettable meal with our simple suggestions:

  • Cover the turkey loosely in foil before placing it in the oven. This will ensure even cooking without overbrowning. Remove the foil for the last 40 minutes of cooking time to allow the skin to become a crisp golden brown
  • Gently baste the turkey in the cooking juices once an hour to help retain the natural moisture of the meat
  • To make sure that the turkey is thoroughly cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. The juices should run clear if the bird is cooked through
  • Allow the turkey to stand for around 20 minutes before carving
